everything written here is spot on. This was the best deathmatch tournament in years. A smaller tournament with 8 great deathmatch workers. Not watered down at all- every match was awesome, and the stips were so creative. Ian needs to slim down KOTDM '09 and have fewer workers that really know how to work the deathmatch style rather than fill it up with some obvious 1st round losers that make it a 2 night tournament. Not to say BJW or TJ needs to be flown in, but there are better stips, workers, and tournament design/booking that should go into KOTDM '09 to make it better than the past 2 years.
I own EVERY US deathmatch tournament dvd, and I'd put this one in the top 5.

So I got home from work tonight and my copy of IWA EC's Masters of Pain was waiting for me. After a couple of bong rips and with a cold Icehouse in hand, I sat down to watch the show. Here are my match-by-match thoughts.
Thumbtack Jack vs. Mad Man Pondo - Davey Jones Locker Room Match This was my first chance to see Thumbtack Jack wrestle. While this wasn't a wrestling exhibition (and who wants to see that on a deathmatch show?), it had more than its fair share of cringe-worthy moments. I'm sorry, but fish hooks are fucked up. Post-match, Jack says he wants Necro in Round 2. Be careful what you wish for young man...
Necro Butcher vs. Juggulator - Fans Bring The Weapons The match started out as a re-creation of the infamous one-sided Bull Pain vs. Brandon Prophet match from Plainfield. You can count the offensive maneuvers of Juggulator on one hand for the first 7 minutes. Let's be honest, the bucket had a better chance of beating Necro than Juggulator did. Valiant effort, though.
Side note: I can't be the only one that was hoping Necro would punch Woody Numbers in the face, can I?
"Mr. Insanity" Toby Klein vs. Danny Havoc - Kenzan Death Match The first time I saw a Kenzan used in a match was in a Abdullah Kobayashi match from Big Japan. At the time, I thought it was without question the sickest, most dangerous weapon in a death match that I had ever seen. I wondered who would be the first person to bring it to America. Leave it to Pondo.
My first memory of Danny Havoc is watching Toby Klein carve a GINORMOUS gash in his forehead during KOTDM '06, so this match brings up fond memories. The match was fun and entertaining. The finish kinda came out of nowhere, but it was still a sick match. Oh, and Danny Havoc cuts the most entertaining promos of any death match wrestler alive (closely followed by Pondo).
Ryuji Ito vs. Drake Younger - Carpet Strip Death Match I knew Drake was looking forward to this match for months because Ito is one of his idols, so I was curious to see how nervous he might be. He held up like the professional that he is. No surprise there.
Carpet strips are a weird death match weapon. While I have no doubt they hurt like a son of a bitch when scraped across your skin, visually they aren't spectacular, which I think hurt the crowd reactions. This match was REALLY good, but I think some people will overlook it and think it is less than it could have been with a perceived "more dangerous" stipulation.
This concludes the first round of action. I'll give Drake vs. Ito the best match of the first round.
Thumbtack Jack vs. Necro Butcher - Cabin Fever Match Sometimes, you get what you ask for. Thumbtack Jack got his wish and earned the Necro Butcher in Round 2. And WOW did he step up to the plate. That fall through the light tube/plywood contraption is one of the crazier things I have seen in quite some time. This dude bled ALL OVER and hung step-for-step with Necro. Very reminiscent of Drake Younger's effort from Double Death '06 when he teamed with Ian Rotten against Necro and Toby. MAN SIZED. I've made no secret that I have a no-homo man crush on Necro Butcher, but I'm officially a Thumbtack Jack fan, too. Incredible match. Best of the night thus far.
END OF DISK 1 (a.k.a. Time to hit the bong again)
So, I'm fairly drunk and pretty stoned at this point. I'm loving this tournament so far. It's living up to the hype thus far. Anyway, back to the DVD...
Ryuji Ito vs. Danny Havoc - Death From Below Match If the barbed wire trampoline isn't the most creative death match weapon I have ever seen, I don't know what is. Elkview Adam deserves mad props for that creation. So original.
Danny has a bit of a "wardrobe malfunction" at the beginning of the match, but thanks to Mike Burns, is able to save himself from wrestling in his boxer briefs. The match was short, but spectacular and fun.
2008 Master of Pain Finals Thumbtack Jack vs. Ryuji Ito - Electrified Light Tubes & Panes of Glass Without question the two stars of the tournament thus far meet in the finals. Who'd have thunk that a wrestler from Japan and a wrestler from Germany would meet for the first time in West frickin' Virginia of all places? The crowd is more into this match in the first 2 minutes than they seem to have been in the rest of the tournament combined. Maybe it's just me, but he crowd has seemed, I don't know, "off" all night.
This was, for my money, the best match of the tournament. It's probably the best Electrified Light Tube match I've ever seen and both men went balls to the wall to finish the tournament. Thumbtack Jack was the runaway MVP of the tournament and the rightful champion. Anybody else winning would have felt weird.
It would not surprise me in the least to see Thumbtack Jack, Drake Younger and Danny Havoc in Big Japan sometime in 2009 and each guy deserves it. A lot of people talk about "the future of death match wrestling" and well, Jack, Drake and Danny are exactly that.
If a gun was held to my head and I was forced to rank the matches, they go as follows:
1) Ito vs. Jack 2) Jack vs. Necro 3) Ito vs. Drake 4) Ito vs. Havoc 5) Havoc vs. Toby 6) Pondo vs. Jack 7) Necro vs. Juggulator
This was an awesome DVD that every death match fan should go out of their way to see.

thoughts: Jack's entrance theme is incredibly catchy
Pondo is getting big
Juggs needs a lot of work
Matches: Davey Jones was incredibly disturbing and was just the beginning of Jacks incredibly long night
Fans Bring The Weapons was a fun, comedy match which featured a bucket having better offense and selling than Juggs
Kenzen was a fun brawl that saved the Kenzen spots for last and had some good comedy as well
Carpet Strips was amazing and brutal as you could tell Drake gave everything he had
Cabin Fever was my match of the night as Jack and Necro looked like zombies afterwards, mutilated eachother and Jacks big bump was insane
Death from below was a short but sweet squash with an amazing superplex
the finals was brutal as when Jack sat the contrapation set up he just looked like he wanted to just go home. Both men could barely walk by still pulled put a fun match

Watched this like five time already and it is the best DVD I have bought this year.
Pondo/Jack makes me cringe it is that sick and disturbing. Still a good match.
Necro/Juggs was kinda boring in my opinion.
Havoc/Toby was a really fun match. I found it funny how they had no idea what the hell kenzens were.
Drake/Ito was my second favorite match of the night and my favorite of Round One. I didn't think the carpet strips looked good on DVD but it was still a sick match and a really great match. kudo to both guys.
Jack/Necro was my favorite match of the tournament. When Jack got punched through the tubes was crazy and got me and my friend to stand up in a amazement. I also really liked the out of nowhere pin where they teased the spot but Jack got Necro in a small package.
Havoc/Ito was good but a little disappointing. I just though that it should've gone on a little longer. I thought it was hilarious when Havoc's pants almost fell down. And saying that if he doesn't fix his belt this match is ruined. The last three spots were really cool as well. The promo by Havoc after the match was HILARIOUS.
Ito/Jack was an awesome finals. I never would have imagined that these two count ever be in the same ring ever and man did they bust their asses. Jack seemed thankful that he won. And I hope he comes back to the states sometime. The finish was awesome and I also thought it was bad ass when Ito busted the lit light tube over his head.
I would say this was the best Death Match tournament of 2008. I thought this years KOTDM was the second best KOTDM and this years TOD was decent. But this blew both TOD and KOTDM out of the water. Anybody that hasn't seen this needs to buy the DVD.
Oh and I agree Jack's theme song is VERY catchy.

I about laughed out loud when TJ's song started playing for the first round, watching the DVD, and my brother said, "I've played that song on Rock Band." Right when the lead announcer for IWA-EC says... "I've played that song on Rock Band."
But, yeah, that song is killer, and I had to get it added to my Playlist when I got home from the tournament that night.

I'll pick this one up along with a bunch of other shows at the next SMV sale.
I don't find Jack's theme as catchy as Pondo's. That Japaneese rap music is pretty good.

Just finished watching it. I will say it was without a doubt the best deathmatch tournament of the year. Everyone in that tournament really showed me something, and it was definitly a must own DVD.

I've watched it twice since I got it. Excellent excellent stuff. I'm pumped to see what Pondo and Adam have planned for next year. Kudos IWA EC.
